"I don’t just
look through the lens with my eye. First, I look with my heart. I
try to view my subjects from a unique perspective and capture
extraordinary moments. I explore the world in a child-like manner in
order to help others see it for the first time ... again."

Joseph R. Sherman
Joseph
Randell Sherman was born in 1958 in the United States of America.
His love for all the Arts comes from his early childhood as does his
ability to imagine and dream of things beyond the visible. This
capacity, enhanced by a vivid curiosity towards all manifestations
of life, became the foundation of Joseph’s creativity, expressed
first through his writings, and later through his photography.
It wasn’t until he moved to Portugal in 2004 that Joseph truly had
the opportunity of beginning to explore his old passion for
photography more deeply. And he started simply by capturing images
of the wondrous creations of life that surrounded him. He found
ordinary things that most people would merely pass by without
noticing and made them extraordinary by looking at them in a unique
way that reached beyond the purely visible. Joseph’s artistic goal
in photography has been to help people to actually “experience”
these precious moments in time. While viewing his photos, you can
really imagine being a part of the picture yourself.
Following his highly successful photo exhibition
“Liquid
Universe”, featured in January 2005 in the coastal city of
Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, Joseph has created photographic
collections centered in the theme "The Four Elements of Nature":
Water, Fire, Earth and Air.
Fifty photos were to be chosen from these collections to be included
in the award winning book "Universes Beyond the Visible ~ Elements of Dream"
released in January 2006 and featuring, in addition to
Joseph's photography, his own texts of poetry and poetic prose and
those of his partner, Alexandra Oliveira - with whom he founded the
literary and artistic association
OneLight*® Authors & Creations. (See some of the
photos featured in this book on the left - and read more about it in
the
OneLight*® Bookstore - link also on the left).
("Universes Beyond the
Visible ~ Elements of Dream" has been distinguished with two
very significant awards in 2006: The 1st Prize in the
category "Books, Magazines and Brochures" of the Inapa Portugal /
Arjo Wiggins Contest - and an Honourable Mention
in the category "Book of the Year" of the Pilsner Urquell
International Photography Awards.)
The enormous success of the
photos included in the "Fire" chapter of this book would be the
detonator of Joseph's next exhibition, "Blazing Universe".
This collection was featured in the city of Porto, Portugal, at Galeria 153, between February and March.
Joseph's last exhibition of
photos pertaining to the "Four Elements" theme, took place in May
2006, in the historic setting of one of Portugal's most prestigious
bookstores - Livraria Lello Chardron, in the city of Porto.
This photo exhibition was part of a multimedia event attended by a
numerous and very enthusiastic public, and titled "Elements of Dream", which combined, in a most unique
perspective, the four elements of Nature with four elements of the
Art: Image, Expression, Dance and Music. (See some images of
these three exhibitions & events on the right).
But Joseph’s
photography is not confined to this theme, however inexhaustible it
may be. Rather, like his curiosity and
fascination for all life within and beyond the scope of visibility,
his creations are a permanently evolving, boundless kaleidoscope of subjects and
concepts. Some examples of this variety can be viewed both in
Joseph's Online Studio (see link at the bottom of this
page) and in his photo blog - JosePhotography* Specials
(see link on the right)
His work has recently been recognized by the judges of the most
prestigious international photography contest:
Joseph is a member of the Photographic Society of America
and is currently working on different projects, which combine his
personal artistic perspective and specific advertising targets, and
through which he seeks to expand the scope of his activity.
